The roots of the Energiewende in Germany don't just go back to fighting nuclear energy, it was always just the same about community spirit and sharing clean and affordable energy (Arne Jungjohann highlights this in a great more detail in his book 'Energy Democracy'). Great to see that solar energy (and although not mentioned in the article, also energy storage) are recognised in more and more countries by governments and councils as a way to tackle energy and fuel poverty - one of the most recent ones in the UK being the 40 council-house project in South Yorkshire (see link below). It's a no-brainer regarding the positive environmental AND social impact - here's to hoping we'll be hearing about more projects and legislations of this kind on both sides of the pond.
