This article highlights just how cheap owning an electric car can be. With many utilities offering specific off-peak tariffs for EV owners to take advantage of, the economics are incredibly attractive. The example given equates to around 1p per mile to run an EV! Combined with the significantly reduced maintenance costs it becomes a total no-brainer economically and more then justifies the slightly higher purchase price. This is not to mention the environmental impact and the fact that driving an EV is just an all-round nicer driving experience.
ScottishPower said that by adopting its new tariff, a Nissan Leaf with a 40kWh battery with an average annual mileage of around 6,000 miles would pay just £62 in charging costs each year, equivalent to savings of up to ten times that of a petrol-fuelled car.
