One could get slightly frustrated with the news coming out of Europe nowadays - Brexit has finally happened, the refugee- question is far from being solved, the economic gap between rich and poor is growing; and whilst progress on climate change seems equally slow, this piece of news is encouraging.
CO2 emissions in the EU fell by 12% in 2019 compared to 2018, mainly due to a changing energy mix. This is mainly due to an increase of renewable energy which in 2019 counted for 35% of total production in the EU. This pace of change is unmatched by any other region globally.
However, the real aim of getting out of coal altogether will only be reached if the Eastern European countries who rely heavily on coal, finally commit to a renewable energy future!
